Once Again, The Oscars

So, it’s that time of the year again. Tonight one of these posters will join the big list.

Not the best set of posters ever, but not the worst either. No eyesores at least.

If I were to base my rooting on the posters I would either by hoping for an Hugo win (joyous, colorful, lively) or for a Tree of Life win (simple clean, but emotionally powerful image). But whichever film wins, it won’t be a truly great addition to the list, but it will probably be above the average of the posters for the winners of the last few years.

John Carter (In Mars!) Poster

John Carter Poster

I think this is my favorite John Carter poster so far. Such lovely, epic seeming scenery. And a great pulp book cover style. I’m still not convinced I will like the film, but this poster points at what I want it to be: pulp, epic, bizarre, otherworldly fun.

Which is probably not what everybody wants. And when we talk about a film like this, with a mega budget, the hope must be for something with a very broad, Pirates of the Caribbean like appeal. And I’m really not seeing any that. Not here, not in the other posters.
